Early Child Development

The main aim of the Early Childhood Office is to provide equal opportunities for all the Eastern Cape children, oversee the Teaching and Learning of children in their early years of learning, support the implementation of an approved national learning framework and qualification. This communication serves to outline the responsibilities of the Eastern Cape ECD section.

Overview

Several aspects indicated that, emotional, social and physical development of young children has a direct effect on their overall development, adulthood and that is why early intervention is suggested.

In responding to the above statement, the Department of Basic Education introduced National Curriculum Framework which is a national policy document that guides practitioners on the 0-4 curriculum.

The Eastern Cape Department of Education is also informed by NCF policy in learning. The NCF policy in training the practitioners with the intention of laying a solid foundation in the early years of learning.

The NCF policy is linked with other curriculum policies such Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statement (CAPS).

To improve the pre-primary education, the department has trained some practitioners on the ECD National Qualification Framework (Level4) and the plan is in place to train 1700 practitioners.
