YOUNG LINGUISTS SHINE IN EASTERN CAPE’S INDIGENOUS LANGUAGES COMPETITION The Eastern Cape Department of Education recently hosted the Indigenous Languages Provincial eliminations event which was a vibrant celebration of linguistic heritage at the Mandla Makupula Education Leadership Institute in East London. The event aptly referred to as a 'language festival' brought together Grade three (3)- seven (7) learners from the 12 Education Districts in the Province. The festival was designed to engage learners in various literacy components including spelling, creative writing, word relay and book reviews. These activities aimed at developing language skills, critical thinking and creativity among the learners. According to Noxolo Twalo who is the Subject Planner for Indigenous Languages, the event was a strong platform for promoting indigenous languages and fostering pride in cultural identity to learners. Twalo proudly highlighted that the Indigenous Languages Provincial eliminations showcased the Province's dedication to promoting indigenous languages and instilling a passion for language and literature among learners. "As our learners continue to grow and develop their skills, their teachers and educators will remain instrumental in nurturing their potential”, Twalo added. The activities saw outstanding performances from learners across various districts with Chris Hani West, OR Tambo and Alfred Nzo West Districts standing out. Afika Nyongwana, a Grade seven (7) learner from Lesedi Primary School in the Chris Hani West District won first place in the Grade 7 Sesotho Book Review and Creative Writing competition. Nyongwana expressed her pride and gratitude for the opportunity to express her passion for Sesotho saying that reading and writing has always been one of her favourite things to do. "I enjoyed it mostly in Sesotho as this was my first time participating in this competition and I truly surprised myself. I am grateful for this opportunity to express my passion for the subject," said Nyongwana. Belina Mhaula, a Sesotho teacher at Lesedi Primary School credited her learner's success to dedication, teamwork and support from educators. Mhaula also emphasized the importance of nurturing learners' potential. "We encourage and support the learners to help them reach their full potential and stand out at the Provincial Level.
