By: Sinazo Qwashu

The Quality Learning and Teaching Campaign (QLTC) held a three-day interprovincial meeting in Gqeberha on the 27, 28 and 29 May 2025

QLTC is a program dedicated to improving the quality of teaching and learning. To achieve this goal, stakeholders from various sectors were invited to collaborate and help resolve matters directly related to delivering quality education and establishing a conducive environment in schools.

The key focus areas of the QLTC program include:

* Enhancing educational experience for students and educators alike.

* Ensuring that schools are secure and supportive spaces for learning.

* Collaborations with municipalities: Working together to address           infrastructure and resource needs.

* Mainstreaming the South African Council for Educators (SACE) code     of conduct in education.

* Youth ownership: Empowering the youth to take ownership of the         QLTC program and drive its initiatives.

During the QLTC meeting, Provincial Coordinators presented programs that feed into quality education, highlighting their efforts to improve teaching and learning outcomes. Stakeholders were mobilized to take charge of education and find solutions to pressing challenges.

The Eastern Cape MEC of Education, Fundile Gade, delivered a keynote address, welcoming the inputs and emphasizing the need for accountability and progress tracking. He stated that there needs to be a measuring tool to assess progress, otherwise, the same problems would be discussed year after year. He emphasized the importance of respecting the office one reports to and ensuring that each office is performing its tasks effectively.

Key Resolutions

The QLTC meeting resulted in several key solutions, including:

  1. Developing plans to improve school infrastructure and resources.
  2. Collaboration with municipalities for site allocation for schools: Working together to identify suitable sites for new schools.
  3. Defining clear roles and responsibilities to avoid duplication of efforts in collaborations.
  4. Addressing gangsterism, substance abuse, and learner pregnancy: Elevating these issues to the national level to influence policy and criminalize harmful behavior.
  5. Collaborating with the Health Promotions Directorate to elevate comprehensive sexual education in schools and curb learner pregnancy.
  6. Elevating skills subjects to promote practical skills development.
  7. Engaging all stakeholders as needed to address specific challenges.

The meeting concluded on a high note, with provinces set to implement these resolutions and drive quality education forward. With a renewed focus on collaboration, accountability, and progress tracking, the QLTC program is poised to make a meaningful impact on the education sector.
