Eastern Cape Department of Education partnered with the University of Westen Cape to hand over two Science Laboratories to Mizamo High School and Sinethemba high School in Mdantsane recently.

The hand over is part of ensuring that quality basic education and exposure of learners to science experiments to enhance their practical learning.

“This is a project that started almost ten (10) years ago between us as a Department with the University with the understanding that Science is one of the most important subjects that we need to focus on as a Province," said MEC Fundile Gade.

Gade further said that the Department hopes that the donation persuades learners to take Maths and Science as their subject of choice.

"We are doing all this to make sure that as a Province we improve learners understanding of both subjects and improve their skills so that they can also contribute to the economic development of the province," added Gade.

University of Western Cape Professor Rajendran stated that while engaging with the education sector, they have put forward the required need to build Laboratories to promote Science teaching.

"We have committed ourselves as social partners on changing the system as well as providing an enabling environment to facilitate meaningful teaching of science,” said Rajendran.

Prince Mpengesi and Luhle Matsholweni who are learners at Mizamo high school, expressed their appreciation for the donation saying that they are happy with the initiative taken by both parties involved.

They also stated that Science is one of their favorite subjects and they are highly grateful that their school was chosen from many schools in Mdantsane to have a Science Laboratory.

"We can’t wait to do experiments in our Lab and this will make things easier for us to choose our careers, we will be choosing our study streams next year." concluded Mpengesi.
