The Partnership between the Department of Education and the University of Western Cape was established in 2016, focusing on teacher development. 

Some Educators enrolled on a science programme who some graduated with Honours and Masters degree.

The department identified that some schools are under resourced in terms of science labs and science equipment for practicals. 

A plan was developed in a form of science competition for schools to win a science lab prize with science kit.

Mehlomakhulu High School in Joe Gqabi District was the 10th School to be handed over a lab and Science kit according to the agreement between the ECDoE and UWC.
