We appreciate amakhosikazi enza umsebenzi omhle kwiSebe lezeMfundo.

As cabinet declared 2021 as the Year of Charlotte Maxeke (1871-1939), we hereby join in the celebrations of her life and achievements to inspire the women of the present age.

Charlotte Maxeke was a religious leader, social and political activist. She was the first black woman to graduate with a university degree in South Africa with a B.Sc. from Wilberforce University

Ohio in 1903, as well as the first black African woman to graduate from an American University.

The Eastern Cape Department of Education is committed in ensuring that 50% of positions at senior management level are occupied by women.

This is further strengthened by the recent appointment of the new head of department, Dr Naledi Mbude, who is also a woman.

We shall continue to strive for equality and protection of the rights of women in the Department of Education.
