The Eastern Cape Department of Education, MEC Fundile Gade hands over Mfiki Primary school to the community of Amathole West Education District in Middledrift on 22 June 2021.

The R36 08 8876 million newly built school consists of 5 ordinary classrooms, 1 Grade R classroom, one multipurpose centre, a laboratory, a library/media centre, also many other things such as an admin block, a sick room, a storage room, a nutrition centre and fencing amongst many other facilities.

Fundile Gade said, "handover forms part of the great department's grand plan to ensure teaching and learning takes place in a conducive environment across the Eastern Cape Province."

Additionally, Gade said "We are here today not only to handover the school to the middledrift community but mostly to ensure that all children of school going age have access to resourced  schools closer to their communities."

Principal of Mfiki Primary School, Siphamandla Namate indicated that Mfiki was established in 1974, where the school only had 42 learners.

Siphamandla said, "the new construction started in 2017 and was occupied by learners in 2019, and learner enrollment has steadily increased to 206 learners in 2021."

Therefore, this can be attributed  to the positive attitude of the teachers, the strong leadership and management  as well as support by the parents and the community at large.

"The school strives to perform at it's best and has developed a school improvement plan which addresses curriculum provision and resources, quality of teaching and educator development, school safety, security and discipline and ongoing improvement of school infrastructure," added Siphamandla.

Expressing the love for the school was Ahlume Nteyi, Grade 7 learner, she said, "I am very honoured to be part of this historical event, as the new school will give us a conducive learning environment and would like to thank the Eastern Cape Department of Education for such a beautiful school where we get to learn alot of fun things."
