Empowering School Leaders: Principal Induction Program

The School Administration Directorate, in collaboration with Human Resource and Institutional Operations Management, recently hosted a three-day induction program for newly appointed principals of Cluster B in East London. This initiative aimed to equip school leaders with the necessary knowledge, skills, and insights to excel in their roles.

During the program, school principals were empowered with legislation, policies, regulations, and personnel administrative measures to ensure compliance and effective school management. Clear expectations were set, and department priorities were outlined, providing principals with a roadmap for functioning schools. The program also offered valuable networking opportunities, allowing new principals to connect with peers, learn from experienced leaders, and gain insights into effective school management.

Luleka Gubula, Principal from Manzolwandle Primary School, said, "We appreciate the induction as it will assist in countering problems and strengthening leadership skills." This sentiment echoes the Department of Basic Education's commitment to capacitating newly appointed principals and improving educational outcomes.

Joseph Varkeychan, Chief Director of Resourcing and School Administration, emphasized, "Newly appointed principals are expected to apply the knowledge and skills gained during the program to drive positive change and improve learner outcomes." The Department's ongoing support and development initiatives will be crucial in ensuring the continued success of these school leaders.

Mzimhle Mabona, Assessment and Examination Chief Director, noted, "There is a natural manager within you, who provides administrative and curriculum leadership."

By investing in principal development, the Department of Education demonstrates its commitment to professionalizing principalship and enhancing school leadership. This induction program was a support to the new principals as they transitioned into their leadership roles. As the newly appointed principals return to their schools, they are poised to make a meaningful impact on the education system, driving positive change and improving learner outcomes.
