The Eastern Cape Department of Education gave a presentation to a Joint Portfolio Committee about the Early Childhood Development (ECD) sector to officially cease to be part of the Department of Social Development and fall under the Department of Basic Education.

"The function shift is a purely administrative process where functions or responsibilities are transferred from Department of Social Development to Basic Education," said Chris Hani West District Director Nicolad De Bruyn as he was acknowledging the attendees.

One of the speakers of the day was the Communications Chief Director, Zama Mnqanqeni, who told the attendees on how the session would be, he said, "Today's session will be a dialog between the DSD and ECDoE representatives with the attendees most importantly bases on the preparations for the function shift going forward."

The main goal of the two sister departments is to improve the quality of ECD in South Africa, said ECDoE, Director for Development Programme, Mzoxolo Zazela as he was giving a presentation of the movement of the ECD.

Zazela further said, "the Department will be building on the important work that has been done by the Department of Social Development  and by a multitude of Non Profit Organisations NPO's and other organisations in the sector.
