The Eastern Cape Education Department welcomes back all schools for the second term, hoping that all our educators had a restful recess and ready to execute their work of teaching and learning across the province.

The department urges everyone to hit the ground running, while effectively utilizing the available time for teaching and learning.  As the sector will be opening for the new term, the department hopes that disruptions and unnecessary closure of schools due to dissatisfaction of whatever nature that is not desirable. 

Additionally, the department urges all the stakeholders to engage constructively and not touching schools, making sure that schools are allowed to proceed with their business, and protecting the teaching time at all cost.

As for the department and the delivery of textbooks and stationery, the department would like to reiterate that as for stationery, we completed delivery in the first term, but those outstanding textbooks in the few schools that have to be attended, the department will continue to monitor the work done, and update the public on the deliveries.

To date, out of 4932 schools in the project scope, 3504 schools have received their textbooks as of 31 March 2022. The textbook top-up delivery project, is currently at 84%.  This means that, out of 552 069 textbooks in the project scope, 465 373 textbooks have been delivered to 3504 schools.  

Furthermore, textbooks for 1705 schools were collected as of the 1st April 2022,  to be delivered to schools. Since textbook are in transit, the department will continue to provided update upon collection of textbooks for schools during each day.

The department will continue to work with schools, School Governing Bodies and communities to ensure that schooling continues without any further disruptions. 

As for infrastructure, the department will continue to deliver state of the art schools to ensure that teaching and learning takes place in a conducive environment. Tomorrow, MEC Fundile Gade and Premier Oscar Mabuyane will be handing over Ntyatyambo primary school in Peddie.  The handover

of this multimillion rands worth school is a compelling reality that the department is committed to redress infrastructure backlogs.
