ECDoE commemorates International Mother Language Day

The Eastern Cape Department of Education in partnership with the Department of Sports, Arts and Culture held 2022 International Mother Language day in East London at the International Conference Centre.

"The celebrations falls under the objective under the theme: Using Technology for multilingual learning," said ECDoE MEC, Fundile Gade as he was speaking on behalf of the Education Department.

Gade also highlighted the linkage between language and culture and said the celebrations should assist on escalating and promoting the use of language in our society.

The programme started by live streaming the event on eNCATV where Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture Nathi Mthethwa highlighted the importance of using mother language. 

The Department of Sports, Arts and Culture Director General Vusumzi Mkhize who also graced the event said, "We are here today to celebrate the importance of our mother language with the view to reflect on the challenges that we face, therefore I warmly welcome you and hope that we learn from the event."

Chairperson of the Pan South African Language Board, Edward Mudau said, "We are here today to celebrate International Day which reminds us on advance mother language education throughout the country and not forgotting the speed up recognition of South African sign languages."
