EC EDUCATION BRIDGES THE GAP WITH SPECIALIZED LTSM HANDOVER

In a heartwarming display of commitment to inclusivity, the Eastern Cape Department of Education Inclusive Education Unit handed over specialized Learning and Teaching Support Materials (LTSM) to McLachlan Senior Secondary School, Hankey Primary School and Northern Lights Special School in the Sarah Baartman and the Nelson Mandela Education District.

By delivering these materials, the department makes a significant impact with 57 Eastern Cape Province schools benefiting from the specialized learning materials designed to support learners with diverse needs.

According to Jerome Fredericks, Deputy Chief Education Specialist for Inclusive Education, these specialized materials are essential in ensuring that learners with diverse educational needs receive the support they deserve. Fredericks emphasized that the initiative revolves around three key principles: accessibility, individualization, and overcoming specific learning barriers. "These materials are not only vital in special schools but should also be readily available to learners in mainstream schools, enabling them to access the curriculum and participate fully," he added.

The EC Education Koukamma Circuit Manager, Zilindile Thambo, expressed his excitement about the handover on behalf of the district, saying, "We are honoured and extremely excited about this initiative taking place in our district of Sarah Baartman. Notably, this area has historically been rural and most disadvantaged, with many learners facing significant learning difficulties. McLachlan High and Hankey Primary schools are prime examples, located in vast and rural parts with limited resources and specialist services. This equipment will not only benefit learners with special needs but also those in the mainstream."

He added, "As a district, we wholeheartedly support inclusive education practices and firmly believe that every child has the right to quality education, regardless of their disability. We leave no learner behind."

Lein-Mari Smuts, a dedicated Life Skills and English First Additional Language Grade 3 educator at Mclachlan School expressed her enthusiasm about the impact brought by these specialized LTSM on her learners. "These materials will enable them to engage meaningfully and reach their full potential." Smuts highlighted the significant changes this would bring to teaching and learning, enhancing the overall educational experience for her learners.

Logan Beckett (15) Technical Occupational Curriculum 1 male learner at Northern Lights Special School in Nelson Mandela Bay Education District shared her excitement, saying, "These specialized LTSM will make a huge difference in our learning. We are grateful to the Department for not forgetting about us. This shows they care and are committed to giving every learner inclusive education. Thank you for believing in us and supporting us to reach our full potential," added Beckett.
