EASTERN CAPE EDUCATION ADVISORY COUNCIL INDUCTED TO DRIVE PROVINCIAL EDUCATION EXCELLENCE

The Eastern Cape Department of Education recently inducted its newly appointed Advisory Council in a two-day session held in East London. MEC Fundile Gade officially welcomed the council members and swore them in, emphasizing the importance of addressing key issues, particularly equity, in shaping policy direction. Gade stressed the need for the council to prioritize equity, ensuring the department's policies promote inclusivity and address the needs of diverse populations. “We are a bigger department; therefore, we need to respond to policies of equity and be an inclusive state”, said Gade.
The council will play a crucial role in shaping policy direction, focusing on issues that impact on the department's effectiveness and efficiency. It will also investigate the challenges facing the department and develop strategies to address them. The work of the council will ensure improved education outcomes through effective planning, monitoring, and evaluation. Enhance service delivery through strategic human resource management and development and foster partnerships with stakeholders to support education initiatives.
Prof Mzuyanda Mavuso, Chairperson of the Eastern Cape Education Advisory Council, expressed deep concern about the rationalization program, emphasizing the need for swift completion to create a favorable learning environment. However, he also acknowledged the complexity of the issue, requiring careful handling to preserve the legacy of communities who invested in educational infrastructure. He reiterated that the ultimate goal of the rationalization program should be to enhance the quality of education, ensuring that learners receive the best possible support and resources.
Zama Mnqanqeni, Chief Director for Communications and Stakeholder Management, emphasized the significance of the Advisory Council's work, rooted in Chapter 29 of the South African Constitution, which guarantees the right to education. This fundamental right ensures everyone has access to basic and further education, with a focus on equity, access, and resource allocation. Mnqanqeni highlighted the importance of equity in education, ensuring all children have access to quality education and the necessary tools to succeed. This includes:
- Addressing past racially discriminatory laws and practices
- Promoting equity in education
- Considering the needs of diverse learners
The Eastern Cape Department of Education welcomes the ECEAC and is ready to embrace the positive change that will be brought by these stakeholders who hail from different walks of life and bring multiple of skills and expertise within this structure and the education space.
