Eastern Cape Department of Education, in collaboration with various stakeholders, recently commemorated the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking at Rietberg Primary School in the Sarah Baartman District. The event was held under the theme “The evidence is clear,” highlighting the urgent need to address the scourge of drug abuse and illicit trafficking.

The event brought together representatives from the Department of Health, Department of Correctional Services, Social Development, LoveLife, and other stakeholders to raise awareness and intensify efforts to combat drug abuse. The gathering aimed to educate students, educators, and the broader community about the dangers of drug abuse, its consequences, and the support available to those affected.

The Director of School Health and Safety, Learner Support, and Learner Enrichment, Pamela Gxuluwe, emphasized the department’s mandate to educate children about drugs at an early age. “As the department, we have a mandate to educate children at an early age about drugs and ensure that learners participate in extra-mural activities,” she said. This approach aims to prevent drug abuse by promoting healthy lifestyles and alternative activities.

Emilly Mohlomi from the Department of Social Development, highlighted their commitment to supporting school children under the age of 18. “We offer rehabilitation services to school children, fully funded by Social Development,” she said. This support provides a vital safety net for young people struggling with drug abuse, helping them to overcome addiction and rebuild their lives.

Through interactive presentations, discussions, and activities, participants gained a deeper understanding of the issue and its impact on individuals, families, and communities. The event also served as a platform to launch initiatives and strategies to prevent and address drug abuse in schools and beyond.

By joining forces, the stakeholders demonstrated their commitment to creating a safer, healthier environment for all, particularly the youth. The event marked a significant step towards tackling the challenges posed by drug abuse and illicit trafficking in the Eastern Cape.
