| DEF REPORT BACK SESSIONS By: Dineo Matroko The Stakeholder Management and Citizen Care Services Directorate recently engaged with District Education Forum (DEF) in a form of report back sessions in providing a progress update to their stakeholders on their key activities and initiatives. According to the Stakeholder Management Acting Deputy Director, Gcobisa Katikati-Mokaloba the DEF is mandated to report back in a form of a conference as stated on NO.10.3.5 of 10 of the Communication Strategy of the DEF’s constitution. This reporting cycle kicked off in Joe Gqabi District, followed by Chris Hani West District and concluded with Chris Hani East District. Thabang Malehase who is the Chairperson of the DEF in the Joe Gqabi District reported that the district which is mainly rural is one that is complex with its own needs that are not a ‘one glove fits all’. “Since taking office, we have successfully bridged the gap between the Director’s office and local communities addressing issues that impact them directly. This collaborative approach has contributed to our goal of ensuring quality teaching and learning as reflected in the steadily rising Grade 12 pass rate” added Malehase. Anele Hala who is the Deputy Chairperson of Portfolio in the forum said that even though there were challenges with the tasks they were given, they have achieved a handful with the support of the District office. “Despite the water challenges in the district, we have managed to bring in Gift of the Givers as an external stakeholder to install boreholes in at least two schools in the districts and continue to work with the municipality as a sister Department to try and solve the water challenge”. Hala also added that the district has one of the best learners in the districts when it comes to Mathematics and Science quoting his former teacher that ‘for you to be the best make this thing a game.’ And that is what makes learners to smoothly ride on these subjects. Chris Hani West’s DEF prides itself in not only making sure that there was no nepotism in the employment of unemployed graduates but also making sure that they are skilled beyond the initiative. Lazola Mditshwa who spearheads the DEF in the Chris Hani West District aesthetically concluded by stating that the graduates employed in the Youth Initiative programme are encouraged to learn skills that will enable them to be productive and continue to put bread on the table even long after the contractual employment of the department. |
